Broomhall In Shock Again

Posted by nurinkhairi in ,

Us Broomhall residents in Sheffield were alarmed at the gunshot incident which happened last July 1st. One man dead and three others injured. Many Broomhall residents nearby the crime scene were instructed to stay at home and the areas were sealed off from public.

Myself in Malaysia wasn't being spared of panic upon hearing the news. Two years living in Broomhall, plus one year living adjacent to Broomhall area, off Western Bank area, it seemed that I have heard it all. Gunshots, break-ins, fights, held at knifepoint, mugging, death - just in a span of three years! I am telling you, in all 15 years I have been living in this suburbian residential area where I am typing this entry now (I am in Malaysia now FYI), the worst-case crime I have ever heard of was a late night break-in where the burglar was caught red-handed by patrolling guards.

Broomhall is located conveniently near the University, the city centre and various amenities are just a short walk away. The property value in this area is comparatively cheap and thus attracted many those in the middle to lower-income bracket. With these in mind, it is of not surprising why this area attracts a lot of students and those residing in the country on the 'asylum seeker' ticket. For those living within this area and the outsiders, Broomhall is a bit of a troubled area - it was thought that the multicultural residents living in Broomhall (many of them are Afro-Carribean, Somali, Yemeni and others) brought out various street gangs and often clashes between these groups occur. I thought it was a bit of a rumour initially, but now I was led to believe so.

A car that came crashing into a curb in front of my house one late night, followed by a brawl and noisy fight which I witnessed with my own eyes in my first year whilst in Sheffield (2006), enough to send chills down to my spines. I returned back to bed shivering in fear, for I have never witnessed such a thing. Little did I know that it was then followed by many other traumatic incidents revolving around this little housing area.

Break-ins are pretty common in student areas, and many Malaysians are also not spared of such traumatic experience. Even my own student housing which housed 12 girls was broken into and the burglar managed to snatch away a laptop.

Brunswick Street where the gunshot incident happened is just adjacent to my street. The same street that witnessed a gunshot incident in 2007. It seems that we have been living in fear all this while. I promised myself never again to walk alone in the middle of the night from the library. And I thought that Sheffield prides itself as being the 'Safest City in England'? Seems like crime is rampant everywhere.

Ironically, I have never ever seen people got wildly drunk.
